SELECTING THE RIGHT HOME CARE AGENCY
Learning as much as possible about a prospective agency is the best way to determine which agency is most appropriate for you or a loved one. As you research potential providers, your doctor, friends, and family may be able to suggest agencies that they have worked with or used in the past.
Once you have the names of several agencies, you will want to learn as much as possible about their reputation and the services they provide.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
When selecting a home care or hospice provider, there are some very important questions that you should ask. Not all agencies are the same and there may be multiple agencies servicing your area.
You have the right to choose the best provider for you. Communicate this choice to your primary care doctor, specialty physician or case manager.
When interviewing potential agencies, make sure to ask the following questions:
- Are they licensed?
- How long have they been serving the community?
How do the agency screen and select caregivers prior to an assignment?
- Are references checked for caregivers?
- Are criminal background tests and/or drug screens conducted?
- Do they employ their staff or are they subcontracted?
- How often are caregiver services monitored?
- Can you meet your prospective caregiver?
- How does the agency supervise its staff in the client’s home?
- Who will work with the client and family to develop an individualized plan of care or service plan?
- How are emergencies handled after normal business hours?
- Does the agency follow defined ethical guidelines?
- What is their policy to ensure the rights of patients?
- Are they an Indiana Association for Home and Hospice Care (IAHHC) member? What other professional affiliations does the agency maintain?
